Cultural Humanity in a Global Community
September 28 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am CDTFree
Tuesday, September 28, 2021 – (10 – 11:30 AM) As the third-largest city in the country, Chicago is a global metropolis, home to nearly two million immigrants and refugees in the metro area. In the northside of Chicago alone, more than 40 languages are spoken. This diversity is what makes Andersonville and Chicago so special, rich, and unique. Join us for a scenario-based workshop that equips participants with the skills to thoughtfully engage the diverse businesses with whom they come into contact.
In this session, we will:
● Better understand the diverse cultural and linguistic landscape within which Andersonville is centered
● Support respectful engagement of clients from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, in a way that upends cultural stereotypes and ensures that clients feel seen and welcome when visiting local businesses
● Learn strategies for identifying and disrupting cultural bias and disrespectful behavior on behalf of other people
● Better understand the services available to immigrant and refugee individuals, to make appropriate referrals when necessary.
