This year, the Department of Housing (DOH) is introducing a pilot program, Green Homes Chicago, which provides up to $50K in free energy upgrades to help low-income homeowners go electric.
Program Details
The program provides free home energy upgrades and energy efficiency retrofits of up to $50,000 to income-eligible homeowners. Upgrades may include:
- New insulation
- Heat pump HVAC system
- New appliances
In most circumstances, participation will involve replacing your current appliances with new, high-efficiency electrical appliances.
Converting your home from gas to electric has a myriad of benefits, including reduced utility bills, increased comfort, and better air quality. Who is Eligible?
Residents who own and occupy a 1-4 unit property in the City of Chicago and meet the income guidelines can appl for the program! Any household earning up to 80% of the area median income (AMI) are eligible to participate. That means in order to qualify, your income should be between $62,000-$96,000 depending on your household size.
Once your application is accepted, your home will be screened for physical condition and feasibility for cost-effective electrification. Please keep in mind that not every selected homeowner will be able to be served!
How to Apply
Registration for the program will open on 9am on Monday, May 6th, and will close on Friday, May 17th at 5pm. You can register at www.chicago.gov/greenhomes. You can also register via 311 through the CHI311 app or by calling 311.
