Construction on the Granville Traffic Safety project will begin the week of June 16th!

The scope of the project is on W. Granville Ave. from N. Kedzie Ave. to N. Sheridan Rd, and construction is tentatively scheduled to begin today, Monday, June 16th, pending clearance from and coordination with existing utilities. The project is expected to take 12 weeks, weather permitting.

The work will include pedestrian safety improvements along the corridor, as well as the conversion of several blocks of Granville from two-way to one-way, to reduce cut-through traffic.

  • Granville between Western and Claremont will be converted to a one-way westbound
  • Granville under the underpass between Ridge/Ravenswood and Ravenswood will be converted to a one-way west bound
  • Granville between Paulina and Clark will be converted to a one-way eastbound
  • Granville between Clark and Greenview will be converted to a one-way westbound
  • Granville between Broadway and Lakewood will be converted to a one-way westbound

See the map below for where these conversions will take place, and what traffic patterns will look like once they are converted!

In addition to the conversions, there will also be new pedestrian islands on Granville at the intersections of Western and Ravenswood, an extended median at Clark and Granville, and detached bumpouts at the intersection of Granville and Wolcott, and green pavement markings for a bikeway. For more details, you can view the full project plans on the Granville project page!

During construction, temporary “No Parking” signs will be periodically installed as required during working hours (typically from 6am-4:30pm). While there will not be any road closures in the 40th Ward section of this project, there will also be a detour set up on Granville and Glenwood, as that intersection will be closed for the construction of a new raised intersection––see the 48th Ward website for details.

We’re looking forward to safer Granville very soon, but we know that both construction and street conversions can be a headache for neighbors, so we apologize for the disruption! Our team is checking in with crews on a weekly basis to ensure that this project remains on track and that crews are minimizing disruption as much as possible. You can check the project page for weekly construction updates, which will also be included in our newsletter each week.
